The Voice of Indonesia, was closely related to the its historic role in the establishment of the Indonesian state in 1940s, as “the Indonesia’s Independence struggle radio, widely known as the Voice of Free Indonesia.

One of the founders of Radio Republik Indonesia late Mr. Yusuf Ronodipuro, broadcast the text of proclamation of the Indonesian Independence. Through shortwaves transmissions in Bandung, this “diplomacy radio” successfully attracted the world’s community, and the proclamation of Indonesia’s independence on 17^th August 1945 was promptly recognized by countries, such as India, Egypt etc. In 1950, the Voice of Free Indonesia changed its name into VOICE OF INDONESIA or Suara Indonesia.

VOI also intensively broadcast the first Afro-Asian Conference which was organized in Bandung, the West Java capital from 18 – 24 April 1955, in which countries from the continents of Asia and Africa issued the Ten Principles of Bandung. This Bandung spirit triggered the nations particularly in Asia, Latin America and Africa to free from colonialism.

It is clearly stated in the Preambule of the 1945 Indonesia’s Constitution that freedom is the inalienable right of all nations, therefore, all sorts of colonialism on this earth, must be abolished as it is not in conformity with humanity and justice. During the New Order period, VOI was an operational under the former Department of Information.

Now, VOI keeps the spirit alive. We believe that any injustice and any form of colonialism are inhumane, therefore they should be eliminated. We do believe that by dignity, we highly respect human rights, equality of races and nations, and always settle any kind of disputes by peaceful means. We think our greatest contribution to the world is that if we can play a dignitary role no matter how small it is.
